What this means
The figure is the gap between the interest Argentina’s dollar bonds pay in the market and what US Treasury bonds pay. A higher figure means investors see a greater chance that Argentina will not pay its debts on time, and it makes borrowing abroad more expensive for the government, the provinces and companies. A lower figure means the opposite.
Limits
It shows what investors ask today, not whether Argentina will pay: it can move sharply in a day on news, an election or a turn in world markets. It covers the national government’s dollar bonds only, not its peso debt or provincial bonds. JP Morgan builds it from the bonds in its EMBI index; the page shows each business day’s close as ArgentinaDatos republishes it, so a day can arrive late or be missing.
