Franco Colapinto crashed into his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly on lap 35 of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on Saturday, putting both cars and McLaren's Lando Norris out of the race, and was given a five-place grid penalty for the next round.

The collision came at the first corner after a safety-car restart that followed Alex Albon's crash on lap 31. Colapinto, who had started ninth, tried to pass down the inside, locked his brakes and could not slow the car, according to Infobae and La Nación. Both Alpines were running in the points when they were eliminated.

The stewards found that Colapinto had braked too late and entered the corner faster than he could control, and said nothing about the restart conditions justified a more lenient reading, according to Motorsport.com. They imposed a 10-second penalty, which was converted into a five-place grid drop because he had already retired.

Colapinto accepted the blame. "I locked up when I started braking and then I was out of control for the whole braking zone. There wasn't much I could do," he said. "Sorry to the whole team and to Pierre. It was a big, serious mistake, and we lost a lot of points with both cars." Team principal Flavio Briatore said he was disappointed, and Norris criticized the move after being knocked out.

George Russell won from start to finish for Mercedes, ahead of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar. The double retirement dropped Alpine to sixth in the constructors' standings with 68 points, 17 behind Racing Bulls, according to Infobae.

The crash ended a run of 26 consecutive race finishes for Colapinto, La Nación reported, and was the fourth retirement of his Formula 1 career. It also came days after Briatore warned that Colapinto could stop speaking to Argentine media if fans kept up online abuse of Gasly and his family, which followed tense team radio exchanges between the two drivers at the previous race in Madrid.

The grid penalty applies at the next round, scheduled for October 2 to 4. Colapinto sits 12th in the drivers' championship with 27 points.
