President Milei leaves Buenos Aires on Monday night for a two-day trip to Madrid to give economics talks and meet Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Madrid region, about five weeks before Spain’s early general election.
Milei is due to land on Tuesday and fly home on Wednesday evening Madrid time, arriving in Argentina on Thursday morning, according to the Presidency’s schedule. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and presidential spokesman Adrián Ravier travel with him.
The main day is Wednesday. In Madrid time, Milei speaks at the Nueva Economía Fórum, a long-running political and economic discussion series, at 10:15 a.m. At 1 p.m. he meets Jesús Huerta de Soto, a leading economist of the Austrian school, a free-market tradition, at King Juan Carlos University, and speaks at the launch of the university’s master’s program in that school’s ideas. At 3 p.m. he is due to meet the Fundación Disenso, a conservative think tank linked to the right-wing Vox party. Ayuso, of the center-right Popular Party, follows at 5 p.m.
The schedule lists no meeting with Santiago Abascal, Vox’s leader, who is a candidate in the November 29 vote and has party events elsewhere in Spain this week. It lists none with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, a Socialist, or King Felipe VI either. None of Milei’s trips to Spain has been a state visit.
Sánchez dissolved parliament on October 5 and called the early election. Argentina’s presidential office said the trip was planned before the vote was called, and Ravier said Milei will back those who defend the ideas of freedom. Political consultant César Calderón told La Nación that every photo of Milei with Abascal would work as a free campaign ad for Sánchez.
